How does the use of cannabis affect hormone levels in women?
the science and research of hormones and cannabis
There is limited research on the effects of cannabis on hormone levels in women. However, some studies have suggested that the active ingredients in cannabis, known as cannabinoids, may have an impact on the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating various functions in the body, including the menstrual cycle and fertility.
The potential good.
Cannabis may help to regulate the menstrual cycle: Some studies have suggested that cannabis may help to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. In a study published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, women who used cannabis reported a decrease in the severity of menstrual cramps and an improvement in their overall mood.
Cannabis may help to reduce menopausal symptoms: Some studies have suggested that cannabis may be effective at reducing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, women who used cannabis reported a reduction in the frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats.
Cannabis may have potential anti-inflammatory effects: Inflammation is believed to play a role in a variety of conditions that affect women's health, including endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and uterine fibroids. Some studies have suggested that cannabis may have anti-inflammatory effects and may be effective at reducing inflammation in these conditions.
The potential not as good.
One study published in the journal Human Reproduction found that regular cannabis use was associated with increased levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in women. LH and FSH are hormones produced by the pituitary gland that play a role in ovulation and the menstrual cycle. The study also found that cannabis use was associated with longer menstrual cycles and irregular periods in women.
Another study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence found that heavy cannabis use was associated with decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone in women. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that play a role in the menstrual cycle and fertility. The study also found that heavy cannabis use was associated with an increased risk of anovulatory cycles, which are menstrual cycles in which ovulation does not occur.
My personal experience with cannabis and hormone regulation
I get science, however some of the science sounds scary. Like with getting pregnant, what about cannabis use that decreases stress and anxiety and allows you to get pregnant? Or the postpartum depression and anxiety that I quelled with cannabis?
My view on experimenting with your health and well being starts with tracking. Journaling, biometric tracking, blood tests etc. are ways to actually measure what’s working. Its all about how YOU feel and what makes you feel better or be a better human.
I have found benefit in suppressing PMS symptoms like cramps with edibles and backache with THC topical balms. Smoking it helps me get to sleep quicker, less irritable and genuinely more pleasant person to be around when I’m in constant pain or annoyed.
Do your research, make informed choices, and track that shit.
It's important to note that these studies were small and more research is needed to fully understand the effects of cannabis on hormone levels in women. It's also worth noting that the impact of cannabis on hormone levels may vary depending on the individual and the specific strain of cannabis being used. Overall, it's important for women to be aware of the potential risks and side effects of cannabis use, and to carefully consider whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks before using cannabis. It's also important to be aware that the legal status of cannabis varies by jurisdiction, and it's important to be familiar with the laws in your area.
