How to Support Cannabis Equity
The cannabis industry offers many opportunities for economic growth and equity, but it also presents a unique challenge in terms of addressing the harms caused by the war on drugs. Communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by the criminalization of cannabis, leading to disparities in arrest rates and access to the industry.
As parents, it is important to not only educate ourselves on the issues surrounding cannabis equity but also to support policy efforts aimed at repairing the harms of the past. This includes supporting organizations like Marijuana Matters that provide services to communities impacted by the war on drugs, as well as advocating for policies that promote economic opportunities, community reinvestment, and restorative justice.
Supporting policy efforts is crucial in creating a fair and equitable cannabis industry. This can include advocating for social equity certifications, which professionalize the industry and help consumers make informed decisions about who they are supporting. By working together to support cannabis equity and policy efforts, we can create a more just and equitable future for all.
As we continue to see progress in cannabis legalization and equity, it's important to think about the impact on future generations. Let's work towards a future where we can have open and honest conversations with our kids about cannabis, where they can grow up in a world without the stigma of the war on drugs, and where the industry is inclusive and diverse.
When it comes to cannabis and motherhood, there are many factors to consider. While cannabis can provide relief for conditions such as insomnia (like we discuss in Episode 006 with Courtney Davis of Marijuana Matters), it is important to be mindful of dosages and to consult with a healthcare provider before using. Parents must also navigate conversations with their children about cannabis, which from every mom I talk to is consistently a challenging topic. When really is the right time? Taking into account age appropriateness and safety considerations (the red THC triangle label on the packaging), but also how transparency can be beneficial for our future generations.
Let's continue to push for policies that prioritize economic opportunities, community reinvestment, and restorative justice. Together, we can create a better future for all.
